What is Forensic Nursing?

Forensic Nursing is the practice of nursing when health and legal systems intersect. Victims of violence and abuse require care from a health professional who is trained to treat the trauma associated with the wrong that has been done to them, be it sexual assault, intimate partner violence, neglect, or other forms of intentional injury. Forensic nurses are also a critical resource for anti-violence efforts. We collect evidence and give testimony that can be used in a court of law to apprehend or prosecute perpetrators who commit  violent and abusive acts.

What is a Forensic Nurse Examiner?

A forensic nurse Examiner is a Registered or Advanced Practice Nurse who has received specific education and training. Forensic nurses provide specialized care for patients who are experiencing acute and long-term health consequences associated with victimization or violence, and/or have unmet evidentiary needs relative to having been victimized or accused of victimization. In addition, forensic nurses provide consultation and testimony for civil and criminal proceedings relative to nursing practice, care given, and opinions rendered regarding findings. Forensic nursing care is not separate and distinct from other forms of medical care, but rather integrated into the overall care needs of individual patients.

What Is The Arizona Chapter of the IAFN?

The International Association of Forensic Nurses (IAFN) is the recognized authority on forensic nursing. The Association is the catalyst for universal access to forensic nursing care for patients impacted by violence and trauma. Its members are sought out by the public, policymakers, media, governments and worldwide healthcare systems for their expertise and knowledge. The Association and its members are valued for their collaborative leadership across systems. The Association defines and advances the global research agenda to enhance nursing’s evidence based response to the needs of forensic populations. Regulatory bodies and certifying agencies look to the Association for guidance on setting standards of care for forensic nursing services in a variety of settings. The Association serves as a global network for forensic nurses to exchange ideas, serve as mentors and enhance their practice.

The Arizona Chapter of the IAFN

The International Association of Forensic Nurses (IAFN) is our professional home. They set the global standard for forensic nursing practice, advancing education, certification, research, and access to high-quality forensic nursing care worldwide. The Arizona Chapter, like any and all other state chapters, is an extension of that mission, rooted in a focus on our state. We move in full alignment with IAFN’s vision, values, and standards, but our work focuses on the realities, challenges, and opportunities unique to Arizona.

Think of it this way:

In Step with IAFN, With Eyes on Arizona

IAFN sets the compass. The Arizona Chapter carries that direction forward on our own terrain... desert, city, border, and tribal lands. We honor the standards of our profession, while lifting up the needs and voices of our local communities!

What Do We Do That Is Specific to Arizona?

  • Local Legislation & Policy
Together with the IAFN, we track, support, and respond to state-level laws and policies that affect victims, survivors, and forensic nursing practice in Arizona.

  • Community-Specific Trends
We examine the realities of violence and victimization in our region, whether that’s emerging patterns of perpetration, changes in reporting, or unique barriers faced by rural and tribal communities.

  • Support for Arizona’s Nurses
We address the concerns, needs, and professional development of forensic nurses working in our hospitals, advocacy centers, and communities across the state.

  • Interdisciplinary Collaboration
We build partnerships with Arizona law enforcement, advocacy groups, prosecutors, and healthcare systems, making sure the survivor’s journey is met with coordination, not confusion.

How Can I Support My Local Forensic Nurse Examiners?

  • Spread Awareness

Share what you know about forensic nursing. Let others know this care exists, too often, people don’t know help is available. If you are uncomfortable talking with people about it but still want to get the word out... let us have those conversations with you or for you. We are happy to come speak to any groups about the care we provide the community.

  • Advocate for Access

Not every survivor in Arizona can easily reach a forensic nurse. You can help change that by supporting efforts that expand services.

  • Partner With Us
Local businesses, organizations, and advocates can collaborate to provide resources and raise awareness.

  • Champion Equitable Access
Stand for universal access to forensic nursing care, so every survivor, in every community across Arizona, can be met with healing and justice. This belief reflects IAFN’s core vision.
